Mrs. Jacob Lewis is visit ing relatives at Salisbury. Mrs. Judge Starbuck re turned to Winston Thursday. E. D. Stanford, of East Bend, was in the city last week. E. M. Clark and family left Tuesday for Florida to spend the winter. , Ruftis Lenoir and John Jones, of the -Happy Valley, were among our visitors last week. Miss Minnie Bledsoe, who had spent a few weeks here re turned to Raleigh the first of the week. For the first time in a half century there was no rain' here during the entire two weeks term of court. Miss Maggie Hughey has secured the free school at Es chol, and will begin school next Monday. Rev. E. J. Winkler con ducted a successful protracted at Arbor Grove church last week. Many were converted. Hugh Cowles, Esq., o Statesville, passed through town last week, on his way to Ashe to spend a short time. Miss Addie Strieker went to 'her home a Concord last week. She was accompanied by little Miss Mable Hix. Nancy Joines, wife of So licitor Joines, was bitten by a spider hist Thursday night. She has about recovered. Dr. White, Miss Lizzie Wlite and Miss Bertha Spain hour Hvent up to Ifoaring Gap Monday to spend a few days. Mrs. John E. Hubbard vis ited her parents about Osborn ville last week. She was ac companied back homo by her cousin, Miss Williams. Esq. Alec McEwen, of Jeff ersou, came over Sunday, and, his daughter, Mrs. Zoll, je" tin ned home with him Monday to spend a week or two. R. L. Doughton, Esq., of Laurel Springs, was in the city -on business Saturday. It was not exactly ''telephone" busi ness, for he talked face to face Court at Sparta this week, Judge Starbuck, W. W. .Bar ber, H L. Greene, T. B. Finley, Solicitor James W. McNeill, and Frank D. Hackett, all went over Sundav. - . Sherman Brjau, Congress man Linney's Private Secreta ry, and Romulus Linney, Jr , spent last week' at Trap Hill. College, to which Wilkes is entitled. Supervisor Foote will be here Saturday, and some of our young men should a dvise with him about the mat ter. Blair. Col. George Finley left Mon day to spend a month or so at the Battery Park. Mr. Leonard Vyne has gone to Lenoir on business. Mrs. Thomas Brown return ed Saturday from an extended trip to Virginia visiting rela tives. Mrs. J. B. Jones and chil dren are visiiing relatives in Winston this week. ' One Stephen Grubb exhibited his capacity for "grub" a t Caffey, Stafford & Co's. Satur day afternoon by eating six boxes of sardiues boxes a,nd all to the great amusement and approbation of the gaping throng. Whether it was a test of his voracious appetite, or a living advertisement of the ''aforesaid sardines" report sayeth not. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Brown commenced housekeeping Sat urday in the Darlington ' house near the'Methodist church. The telephone system will soon-be a reality. The work of selecting the places for plac ing the poles has already be gun. ' E. V. Pritchet has returned from Lenoir and other points with some nice vehicles and horses for his livery stable. Miss E. A. Pitts has had a nice sign painted on the front window of her new store giv ing it the name of the "Good Luck Store." Good luck to customers, good luck to owner. Messrs. J. R. Combs and Tom Crumpler were in town Monday. Mr. T. 'Welborn visited his parents in Surry county last week, returning Monday. Rev. W. R. Bradshaw has 'Falls and will either preach three Sundays here .or take ciiarge of the church at Elkin. He will continue to preach at IFilkesboro the third Sunday. The revival meeting at the Methodist church closed Sun day. There were several con versions. Mr. Sprinkle, the pastor, is endearing himself to our people. Rev. Mr. began school at the Academe this week and the prospects are good. Mrs. Dr. Scroggs who lives with her sister Mrs. Felix Parks is very low, not expected to live. Mr. G. H. Cheelv, of Knox ville, Term., visited his uncle, C. F. Morrison, of this place, last week. He is a prominent merchant of that place. He was managing: the business of a large firm there before the election last year. He express ed himself in favor of Mr. Bry an. The proprietor threat ened to discharge him if he ypted for Bryan. He worked and voted for Bryan, just the same, and after the election the proprietor kindly cut his wages one half. He politely stepped out and put up a business of, his own, and is . succeeding splendidly. Mrs. Miller and son Lonnie, J of Davie, spent a day or so in j the city last week. Engineer M. T. Teague has sold his lot in the eastern part of town to R. G. Culler. Mrs. B. F. Lunn, off DaVie, : i: visiting her daughter, Mrs. C. Y . filler, at this place. Miss Effie Alexander, of Moravian Falls, is visiting the family of . Albert Forester, this week. - A stray yearling heifer came to R. C. Lowe's last Bun day, and the owner is request to get her at once. Special deputy collector Hunt, of nocks ville, and spe cial deputy marshal! James S. Free, of Ashboro, are here, looking after revenue matters. Elder J. T. King, of Wil mington, will preach at Beaver Creek Adventist church on the fourth Saturday and Sunday of this month. All are invited to attend and hear this eminent divine. Rev. J. S. Matthews and daughter Miss Elizabeth, re turned from Ashe Saturday. In going on Negro Mountain Miss Annie fell and severely hurt herself and she and her mother and remain over there until she improves sufficiently to come home. Mr. Herbert M. Smith, U. S. Inspector of Agriculture De partment, arrived here Mon day. He is sent here to in spect cattle shipped from this point, under the quarantine regulations of the Department. We understand that the rail road authorities will immedi ately erect several pens to be used for cattle inspections. Congressman Linney said while over here at court that if you would give Hort Bower one night to sleep and dream on a case, that he couldn't . be beat on presenting the case to the jury. Mr. Bower conclud ed to try it one night last week. He got along lovely till he came across a mule in the path. He let drive to kick the mule away and his toes came in vio lent contact with the foot board of the bed, and the next day Hort was limping a little. He is of the opinion that mules are dangerous even in dreams, and he doesn't propose to try Lin ney's plan again right soon. WThen Winston had troub le with the negroes some7 time back, the Forsyth Riflemen had to bewailed in to quell the riot. Uncle John Hall and Sebe Vannoy's nation, colored, have been engaged in a sort of a race war for sometime over a little piece of land. Last week the war put on threatening proportions. Uncle John got out his gun and Sebe got his ax, but no damage wa,s done. Next day a fine-cannon (Fin cann.on) was taken through town en route to the scene of war. There has been compara tive peace since. I t takes cannons of some kind to quell negro riots.
